A Funeral Service for Winnifred Garbutt, age 81 of Yorkton, will be held on Friday May 27, 2022, at 11:00 am from the Christie's Funeral Home and Crematorium in Yorkton with Rev. Susan Griffith officiating.
Winnie (Winnifred Joyce Garbutt) passed away at the age of 81 due to complications arising from
multiple myeloma (bone cancer) on May 14, 2022, at Yorkton General Hospital.
Winnie leaves behind her loving husband of 55 years, John Garbutt, her son Scott (Jacqueline),
and grandchildren Cache (Tara), Kaylei, and Columbia. Her son Geoff (Renette) and grandson,
Mark. She is survived by her sister Ruth, sister Judy (Vern), brother Earl (Susan), and
many nieces and nephews. Winnie was predeceased by her parents, Fred and Minnie Hughes
and infant brother.
She was born in Saltcoats, SK, on August 15, 1940, and raised on a farm near Bangor, SK. Her
early years were filled with farming, church, a nd gatherings of family and neighbours. Winnie
began teaching in 1959 in Bangor, SK. She returned to the University of Saskatchewan for further
studies, followed by a teaching position in Hazlet, SK, and two years of teaching at Fairview School
in Yorkton, SK. After that, she transferred to Calgary in 1965, where she met John. They were
married on November 12, 1966. The spirit of educating and giving was a common theme in her
life. There are numerous groups and organizations she volunteered and devoted much of her
time to, including, The Lions Club, Yorkton Hospital, Heritage Park in Calgary, and community
gardens. Her love of gardening and Christmas baking was well known and loved by everyone.
She prepared numerous books of handwritten gardening tips and recipes to pass her knowledge
to her children and grandchildren.

Interment will follow in the Llewellyn Cemetery.
