Sophie Kreptul Obituary

Sophie Kreptul was born on December 28, 1920 on the farm of Sam & Mary Husulak which was 2 miles south of Insinger, Saskatchewan.  Sophie was the third of five children.  She attended Yemen School until grade 8, then she stayed home to help on the farm.  In 1941 she moved to Oshawa, Ontario to join her three sisters.  She worked at the Ajax Factory where they manufactured ammunition for the war.  Later she worked for General Motors on an assembly line putting screws into aircrafts.  In 1945 she returned to the family farm to help her parents.  In 1946 she married Steve Kreptul and they lived on the farm and took it over.  Unfortunately, Steve passed away at age 64 from losing his battle with cancer.  A year later in 1983, her mother who was living with her passed away.  Shortly After, her sister Anne from Toronto retired and moved in with Sophie.  They had eight great years together then Anne passed away in 1988 leaving Sophie alone again.

Being very independent, determined, and dare I say “a suborn woman”, she remained on the farm fencing, repairing, and painting.  At age 100 she was still climbing the ladder to pull snow off her two story building..  Her saying was “I’m not going anywhere; you are going to have to carry me out of here!!”

Sophie planted a huge garden to share with her family.  In fact that’s where we learned the art of making sauerkraut which we do to this day.

Sophie was an avid reader and spent many hours cross stitching.  Her beautiful workmanship is admired in the many Ukrainian shirts she made for her nieces, great nieces & nephews.  Although Sophie had no children, she adopted her nieces and nephews along with their families and treated us as her own.  We often said she was our second mother.

Ukrainian Christmas Eve and Easter Sunday were always spent at the farm carrying on the traditions of our grandparents.

Sophie remained on the farm until 2022 when her 101 body said “Enough is enough.” And as her wish, she was carried out.  Theodore Nursing Home became her new home where she finally got waited on and had plenty of well deserved R&R.  On her 103rd birthday she said “I have another year to go to beat my sister’s record of living to 104.” And she did it!  She could definitely say I DID IT MY WAY!  Her motto for a long life:  Work like hell & don’t give up!!

Sophie was predeceased by her husband  Steve; parents Sam & Mary Husulak; sisters Beth (John) Essar, Anne Husulak, Kay (Harry) Coon; brother Steve (Sophie) Husulak; Nephews Ricky Coon, Jerrett Koropchuk, Joe Posivy; niece Iris Posivy; also special to her were Tony Zahaik and Ron Koropchuk.
