Phyllis Ione (nee Bucholtz) Melnychuk of the Yorkton and District Nursing Home passed
away peacefully in the early morning hours of August 7, 2023 at the age of 88. She was
born on August 5, 1935 to Gustav and Edith Bucholtz. Phyllis attended school in
Ebenezer where she lived until moving to Yorkton to complete her education at the
Yorkton Collegiate Institute.
Phyllis was employed for a short time at Korb Motors and left her job to get married and
start a family. Phyllis and William (Bill) Melnychuk were married on June 5, 1955. Her
daughter Janet was born the next year the day before she turned 21. Sons Gary, Terry
and Grant followed within the next few years. Phyllis was a dedicated mother and
homemaker. Her days were busy cooking, baking, cleaning, and shuttling her kids to
piano lessons, band practices, concerts and music festivals or bowling, hockey and
baseball games and Church. Once her children were grown, she enjoyed watching her
grandchildren’s hockey and baseball games – especially hockey. Brad, Kyle, Breanne,
Brodie, Brett, Tanner and Bailey all played. Phyllis attended hundreds of Minor Hockey
Games, Yorkton Terrier Games, and last winter would still listen to Brandon Wheat King
Games on the radio. Mom was a Habs Fan and in 1980 Bill sent Phyllis and Janet to
Montreal for a week to attend 3 Montreal Canadien games. Phyllis also participated in
the Yorkton Bowling League for many seasons and her team which included Shelley
Melnychuk collected more than a few Bowling Trophies. Holiday turkey suppers were
her specialty. When a friend asked her, why she did all that work, Mom’s response was
“that’s my job”. Phyllis also played piano for the Sunday School Program and often
played the organ for Sunday Services at First Baptist Church for many years.
Phyllis was predeceased by her parents, Gustav and Edith, her husband Bill Melnychuk;
her sister Joyce McMurtrie, a great granddaughter Gabriella, and her niece Jeanne
Mandzuk. She will be lovingly remembered by Janet, Gary, Terry (Shelley), and Grant
(Corrinne); her grandchildren Bradley (Joelle), Saskatoon; Kyle (Danielle), Yorkton;
Breanne, Yorkton; Brodie (Simone), Katepwa; Brett (Allison), Saskatoon; Tanner
(Micheala), Regina; and Bailey (Brayden), Regina; great grandchildren, Kinlee, Lilyanna,
