Muriel Hayden Obituary

After a short illness, our beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Muriel Ellen (nee Cooper) Hayden passed away peacefully at the General Hospital in Regina, Saskatchewan on Wednesday, February 28, 2024 at the age of 75 years.

Muriel was born on December 6, 1948 in Saltcoats, SK. She grew up on the family farm near Bangor and received her elementary education at the Aston School and later completed high school in Melville. After her parents moved to town in 1979, Muriel took over the family farm where she enjoyed farming, her large garden and particularly her flower gardens. She was active in the community district and enjoyed sitting on various clubs and groups. Muriel enjoyed animals, especially horses, and trail rides ending in a bonfire was a favorite past-time. She was a skilled seamstress, baker and cook, and her famous cabbage rolls were a staple at every family gathering.

Muriel’s children were the center of world. Daryn was born in 1972, Ivan in 1973 and Kristal in 1986. In 1995, Muriel met and married the love of her life, Tom, and they moved to the Qu-Appelle Valley near Spy Hill, SK. After 9 years there, they moved back to the Yorkton area to be near Muriel’s mother and children, where they remained on the acreage near Willowbrook and enjoyed many happy years together during their retirement. Muriel delighted in her grandchildren, and spent as much time as she could supporting them in their activities and events. Muriel’s quick wit and authentic personality will be remembered by all who knew her.

Muriel was predeceased by her parents, David and Marian (nee Rowland); her brother Don Cooper, sister-in-law Jeanette Cooper, sister-in-law Sandra Cooper and niece, Shelly Cooper. She leaves behind her husband, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren to mourn her passing and cherish her memory.

Muriel is survived by her husband, Tom Hayden, her children Daryn (Teresa) Varga, Ivan (Tara) Varga, and Kristal (Jason) Hayden-Croswell; stepchildren Glen (Leslie) Hayden, Caroline Hayden, Tom (Dominique) Hayden, and Shelly (David) Hayden; her grandchildren Austin (Olga) Varga, Tavis (Alexis) Varga, Alex Varga, Rylan Varga, Megan Varga, Madison Varga, Ainsley Croswell, Kaiden Croswell and Braelyn Werk; step-grandchildren Byron Hayden, Aaron Hayden, Dylan Hayden, Matthew Cooper, Tyler Cooper, Jarett Luhtala, Ethan Holstein, Pacey Holstein and Serena Hayden; great-grandchildren Mackinley Varga and Jade Varga; her brother Glen Cooper; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives and dear friends.

The family wishes to express their sincere thanks to the staff at the Yorkton Regional Hospital ICU and the Regina General Hospital SICU for their kind and compassionate care in these last few weeks of Muriel’s life.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 16th at Christie’s Funeral Home & Crematorium with Shelly Morris officiating. The cremation committal will follow in the Saltcoats Town Cemetery at a later date, with Tavis Varga serving as the Urn Bearer.
