Matt was born on August 12, 1934 to parents Alex and Annie Panchyk. He was the youngest of four brothers and three sisters. Matt went to Chain of Lakes school which was three and a half miles from home. There he received his grade 8 education.
Matt worked in Winnipeg, Manitoba for his first job where he was a mechanic’s apprentice. He didn’t care much for the city life. So come spring he packed up and headed to Lynn Lake, Manitoba. There he worked at Sherritt Gordon Nickel Mine and operated a dragline. He also hauled dynamite and fuses. The following spring another nickel mine was being developed so he got a job there operating an AC-HD21 bulldozer which was a powerful machine. Matt also worked for a gravel crusher contractor. From mining he took on building highways and grid roads after freeze up. He was bulldozing for P.F.R.A. Pasture. He then worked in Alberta making oil fields and making winter roads in the bush.
In 1960 he married Patricia Romanovitch and together they had one son Marvin who was born in 1962. In 1974 they started farming and did so until 2 years ago. Matt was an avid big game hunter, and loved dancing and socializing at the Senior Centre. Matt was a longtime member of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, Sheho South, Saskatchewan as that is where he was baptized 90 years ago.
Matt is predeceased by his wife Patricia; brothers John, Bill, and Steve; sisters Mary, Kay, and Lena.
Matt is survived by his son Marvin; granddaughters Megan, Halen; and grandson Mitchell.
