Marlene Ross (nee Ziola) was born on June 16,1939 to parents Adolph and Eva Ziola in Wadena, Saskatchewan. At age eighteen, Marlene attended the Saskatchewan Hospital in North Battleford for her registration in Psychiatric Nursing and worked there for three years. Marlene married Grant Ross in 1960 in North Battleford, and they had their only son Curtis in 1961. Grant worked in Community Services. She then transferred to Yorkton Reginal Hospital psychiatric unit. She worked as a supervisor on the Pine Unit.
In 1995, due to bed closures at the Yorkton Hospital, Marlene was promoted to the nursing administration offices, a move away from direct patient care that she had always preferred. After three years in nursing administration, Marlene retired in 1998. Her career in Psychiatric Nursing was a total span of thirty-seven and a half years, which she greatly enjoyed. She also taught CPR in Yorkton and area for thirty years. Soon after retiring, Marlene began experiencing health issues.
Her husband Grant passed away in 1995, and her son Curtis passed away in 2017.
In 2017 Marlene moved to Heritage Heights Lodge in Yorkton which she appreciated, especially the Mennonite cooking and visitations.
As hobbies, Marlene enjoyed knitting and crocheting. She was a long-time member of Westview United Church in Yorkton and was a member of the choir, that she enjoyed immensely.
In her final days she was happy to receive visits from close friends, members from her Westview church, her brother and sister in-law as well as her nephew and nieces, and great nieces & nephews, the Mennonites from Saltcoats, and Thom Carnahan United Church Minister.
As her health deteriorated, she was admitted to Yorkton Hospital, then Melville Hospital, then Kamsack Hospital, and finally Canora Hospital. She was thankful for the care she received, especially from the excellent staff of Canora Hospital.
At age 86, Marlene passed away peacefully, at one with God, at Canora Hospital on April 12, 2026. A good life well lived.
