Marion Popowich passed away peacefully in her sleep on July 7, 2025 at 92 years of age.
Marion Evelyn Shyngera was born on October 25, 1932. She grew up on a farm near Jedburgh, Saskatchewan and had a wonderful childhood. Some of her favorite memories that she shared regularly were spending time with her brothers and their dogs while bringing the cows in from the pasture, helping her mom in the garden, and attending Forest Nook School. There was always time for ball games, which she loved and excelled at, and a few cents to go to the weekly movie with friends.
Marion married Rudolph Popowich on July 14, 1956 and they were sweethearts for 69 years. They moved to Ituna and soon after moved in the house that they lived in for their entire marriage.
Marion was very active and athletic. She was an avid curler at the Ituna Curling Club, a golfer at the Ituna Golf Club since it opened, and she loved going to bingo games. If you look at past issues of the “Ituna News”, you will see many, many photos of Marion regularly winning golf or curling tournaments. She had many trophies in her home from winning these events. Marion golfed until she was almost 90 and could still out drive at least one of her daughters. She loved gardening, canning and volunteered regularly at the church, the hall, curling and golf clubs, the school and many other places in the community. Mom had two daughters, Tracy and Susan, and you can bet that if there was an out of town event, mom was driving them and a few friends to wherever the activity took them.
Marion was a generous and congenial lady. She made beautiful crocheted items and always had a soft and beautifully made baby blanket. She always made them for her daughters’ friends. They became a coveted item for many. We always marvelled at how something so full of holes could at the same time be so warm. When her father died, she took up the role he played, and regularly sent packages and news to family in Ukraine.
Marion lived a wonderful life, full of friends, family and love. She loved spending time with family, particularly her grandchildren. An event wasn’t an event without Marion’s teeny, tiny cabbage rolls, that were not only picture perfect, but delicious.
Marion is predeceased by her parents, Eli (1991) and Eva (1983);brothers Andrew and Mike; and her best friend of 85 years Glenna Watson (Galye).
She leaves to treasure her memory and celebrate her life; husband Rudolph; daughter Tracy and son-in-law Darryle; two grandsons Austin and Avery; daughter Susan and son-in-law Curtis; two granddaughters Samantha and Madison; as well as many other relatives and friends.
Marion spent her last few months at the Ituna Pioneer Lodge - right across the street from where she lived her entire adult life. Marion’s family would like to sincerely thank all of the staff and nurses at Home Care and at the Lodge for the excellent and compassionate care that they provided to Marion during her short stay.
