Lorne Burkatsky
May 1, 1937 - July 28, 2024
Lorne Burkatsky’s family is saddened to announce his passing at the age of 87 years. Lorne was born in Buchanan, SK to Nick and Frances Burkatsky. He grew up on the farm near Hazel Dell. As a young boy, he and his sister Minnie were inseparable, spending Sunday afternoons riding horseback together to avoid chores.
Lorne left the farm at age 18 to join the army - Princess Patricia Infantry where he learned discipline and perseverance. He then worked for years in Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia as a welder, taxi driver, carpenter, on the oil rigs and as a foreman on a crusher. When he returned to the farm, he met Theresa Swiderski, his lifelong love and soulmate - his Tessie. They raised 5 children in the house that he built on the farm.
Lorne and Theresa operated a grain farm and raised cattle. Dad was never idle, finding purpose and pride in the rhythm of the seasons and a hard days work. His cattle were well cared for and we could often hear the hum of his dozer, clearing the land - a favorite task. Dad loved a project. Whether it was crafting a new piece of equipment from spare parts or repurposing old materials to meet new needs, his hands were always busy and his mind was inventing.
Dad will be remembered for his work ethic, love for his family and the simple joy he found in daily work. Left to celebrate his life is his sister Minnie, Ron & Rob; his wife Theresa, children and grandchildren - Bridget (Tony) Elliott, Anthony(Lilian) & Eric; Christine (Kevin) Antonichuk, Matthew; Mark, (Kate), special bumpkin Ava, Ben & Sean; John, (Christeen), Nikolas, Jakob, Luke, Anisja & Liliya; and Ginny (Brad) Walker.
A private family gathering will be held at a later date.
