Donations to the Alzheimer’s Society at Kayo’s request would be greatly appreciated by the family.
Kayo, son of Frank and Edith Morgan, was born at the family farmhouse a few miles outside Saltcoats, Saskatchewan. For 65 years, he celebrated his birthday on January 4th. That is, until Statistics Canada let him know his birthday was actually registered as January 10th. For eight years, Kayo attended Castleton country school. Then as a young man, he met a beautiful young woman named Audrey who attended school in Saltcoats. Kayo and Audrey’s friendship grew and they were married on July 12, 1948 in Saltcoats.
As a young couple, they farmed just outside the town of Saltcoats. Though the hours were long and the work was hard, Kayo loved farming and being outside. He and Audrey spent many summer evenings out on crop tours, checking out the year’s progress, and enjoyed many fall evenings combining and hauling grain. In addition to farming, Kayo worked for a time as a bartender at the Saltcoats Hotel. And for 29 years, he was a school bus driver. Kayo was a friend to many and loved a laugh and a good time. In his early years, if friends were gathered together around a piano, you would always find him singing and dancing into the wee hours of the morning.
Kayo and Audrey raised three children, then welcomed grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. A sports lover, Kayo spent many hours coaching and watching baseball. He was also an avid competitive curler and enjoyed the many friendships he made on the ice. Together, Kayo and Audrey loved camping, fishing, picnicking, and a good family bonfire. They never tired of proudly watching their grandchildren and great-grandchildren’s activities: swimming, curling, skating, bowling, waterskiing, flying planes, baseball, hockey, basketball, football, dancing, singing, and playing music. They loved it all. Over the years, Kayo and Audrey travelled outside of Saskatchewan a number of times on holidays with family or to see family at weddings and graduations and reunions. In 1985, they moved into the town of Saltcoats but their love of farming continued as they helped their son with seeding and harvesting.
Kayo was always Audrey’s true, loving companion, especially through her Alzheimer’s journey. For the past 9 years, Kayo resided at Lakeside Manor in Saltcoats, where his daughters, Linda and Bonnie, and his daughter-in-law, Maureen, helped care for him.
Kayo will be remembered for the twinkle in his eye and his quick smile. He is survived by his children: Linda (George) Mess and family, Bonnie Evans and family, and Larry (Maureen) Morgan and family; as well as his sisters-in-law Merla Atkinson of Centralia, Washington, Jean Flewelling of Bellevue, Ontario, and Lorraine Pearce of Toronto, Ontario. Kayo was predeceased by his wife Audrey, son-in-law Lyle Evans, parents Frank and Edith Morgan, brother, sisters, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Luke (Dorrie) Morgan, Marj (George) Metz, Topsy (Sam) Herron, Snookie (Bill) Herron, Shirley (Fred) Beck, Margaret (Peter) Mody, Lois (Clare) Fandrey, George Pearce, Tom Atkinson, Ted Haynes, and Ralph Flewelling.
