Katheryna (Kay) Zurakowski passed away peacefully on Friday, September 20, 2024, at the Yorkton & District Nursing Home after a lengthy illness. She was 98 years old.
Kay was born on March 10, 1926, in the Chatfield district in Manitoba to Dmetro and Teenie (Marykuca) Stasiuk. She was one of 11 children.
On July 26, 1945, she was united in marriage to Dmytro Zurakowski. In 1946 she contracted tuberculosis and spent two years in a body cast in Fort San and then at home. In 1958 Dmytro and Kay welcomed their daughter Peggy. The couple farmed until 1966 when they moved to Yorkton. She found employment at Lee’s Restaurant, Woolworth’s, and finally at Norway Motors Bus Depot and Restaurant in Canora. She was a very independent woman and a hard worker stemming from her years on the farm with her husband.
Kay was known for her generous and hospitable nature. She loved having family and friends over for a good meal and association. She was especially known for her perogies and became affectionately known as the “Perogy Queen.”
As a young child she learned about her God and Creator, Jehovah. She was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses on August 20, 1940. Because of her love for Jehovah and people, she was motivated to tell others about her Creator and his original purpose to transform the earth into a beautiful paradise. She looked forward to regaining perfect health (if necessary, by means of a resurrection) and living forever with her family on a paradise earth.
Kay was predeceased by her husband Dmytro in 1992, her parents, and nine of her siblings, Mary, Mike, Ann, Toni, Walter, Nick, Stella, Pearl, and Helen. Kay leaves to remember and cherish her memory: her daughter Peggy; her sister Ruth in Salem, Oregon; as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 28, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. (Saskatchewan Time) at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 51 Alderwood Place, Yorkton.
