June Betker Obituary

June Sharon Betker left this world suddenly but peacefully at the Yorkton Regional Health Centre at the age of 71 years.  She was welcomed home to be with the Lord and her beloved parents.
June was born on June 25, 1950 at the Yorkton Union Hospital to Alvin and Mary Betker (nee Schwartz).  She was any only child who grew up in a modest home.  She was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and remained an active member as long as she was able.
She attended Victoria School and graduated from the Yorkton Regional High School in 1968.  Following that she received her diploma as a CNA (the title later changed to Licensed Practical Nurse) at Kelsey Institute Saskatoon which is now known as Saskatchewan Polytechnic Saskatoon Campus.  She was employed at the Yorkton Union Hospital on the surgical ward for many years.  Until numerous health issues and anorexia forced her into early retirement.
June was a devout caregiver to her mother Mary during her battle with cancer.  She was her best friend and was devastated when she lost her on July 24, 1996.  This was followed with the passing of her father Alvin just six months later on January 23, 1997.
In her younger years June loved traveling to Toronto via C.N. Rail to visit family there, plus numerous road trips to Regina, to the lake for picnics and to her Aunt Molly’s and Uncle Alex farm.
From an early age June had a flare for fashion.  Both she and her mom could be seen dressed meticulously from head to toe sometimes wearing matching outfits. And oh how she loved her shoes, purses, scarves and hats. June was legendary for her unique eye glass frames.  She loved to shop!  Meeting her retired nursing friends at the mall for coffee was something else that she enjoyed very much.
June was rather particular and very independent doing things on her own terms and in her own way.  Although life had its own struggles her faith sustained her through these trials.  She truly appreciated the visits and phone calls from her church Pastor’s especially during these last few trying years.
June continued to live by herself, in her childhood home despite mobility issues.  She wasn’t one to take kindly to any suggestions from her close friends.  In 2013 she moved just two blocks south to Victoria Court where she resided until her passing.
She remained independent only asking for assistance as a last resort.  She enjoyed reading, listening to music, watching documentaries, watching black and white movies on DVD and walking.   She enjoyed visiting her neighbors in the court.  June always had time to remember family and friends on their birthdays, holidays and other occasions with a phone call a card or both; she also tried to keep in the loop of family happenings.
June was predeceased by her parents Alvin and Mary Betker, her grandparents Fred and Elizabeth Betke; Adam and Katherine Schwartz; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.  She is survived by her Aunts Olga Betker, Val Betker, Joan Betker, Shirley Burtnik and Uncle Ian Cowan as well as numerous cousins, close friends and neighbors.

'Home is the most wonderful place to be.'
