Ruth Molnar Obituary

Ruth Mathilda (Hickie) Molnar was born on April 1, 1931 in Loon River District, Saskatchewan.    She was the daughter of Michael & Katherine (Novack) Hickie. Ruth passed away at the Brandon Regional Health Centre in Brandon, Manitoba on May 8, 2018.

Ruth was one of seven children in the Hickie family. Being one of the oldest, she often helped care for her younger siblings. After completing high school at Yorkton Collegiate, Ruth attended Teacher’s College in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. She started her career teaching in a one room school house and eventually took a job teaching in Regina where she met John Molnar. They married on July 11, 1959. Ruth and John had three children; Douglas, Gordon, and Janice. They raised their family together in Yorkton, Saskatchewan where Ruth also continued her teaching career. Ruth concluded her 29 ½ years of teaching at St. Paul’s Catholic School, teaching Kindergarten. She was loved by her students and was very passionate about teaching children.

While living in Yorkton, Ruth was a dedicated church member of St. Gerard’s Church. She was an active member of the choir and the Catholic Women’s League. Ruth enjoyed gardening in her large home garden and could often be seen cooking throughout the day, always wanting to feed others. Playing a game of Tile Rummy with her grandchildren or cards with her friends were just a couple of Ruth’s favourite pastimes. When Ruth did take the time to sit down and relax, she enjoyed knitting and crocheting.

After John’s passing in 2004, Ruth remained living in the house that John built for the family. Due to declining health she moved to Brandon, Manitoba in October 2015 where she resided at Riverheights Terrace, an independent living community.  In November 2017 when her health continued to decline, she moved into Kirbyson Home where she loved and was loved by “her girls”.

Ruth is pre-deceased by her parents, Michael and Katherine, her husband, John, sisters, Lillian and Lauretta, and brother, Herb.

Ruth is survived by her son, Douglas (Sharolyn), their children Shara (Nathan) Ewasiuk and Brady, and Ruth’s only great-grandchild, Dax Ewasiuk, all of Brandon, Manitoba;  her son, Gordon (Jeannie) and his children Amy and Logan of Stony Plain, Alberta; her daughter Janice (Mark) Flaman of Yorkton, Saskatchewan, and their children Katherine (James) Bulmer and Christian all of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, and Stephanie of Yorkton, Saskatchewan. She is also survived by brothers, Johnny, Eddie, and George and sister-in-law Adele Molnar; as well as many nieces and nephews.
